chapter twelve

I tested the link between me and Lucifer, ensuring it was in working order.

“The Devil went down to Houston, looking for a doll to tickle…”

“Violet.” Droll amusement sounded through the bond. “I assume this means you’re about to leave?”

“In a little while. Waiting on Dave and Lachlan.”

“Remember my warning. Don’t do anything to jeopardize this alliance. The dragons are an important part of the aerial force.”

“We have an aerial force?”

“Every good army has one. The angels can fly. We need creatures who can fight in the air, otherwise they’ll overwhelm us.”

“What about the other angels?”

His pause went on for too long. “I’m still working on it.”

We can’t count on the angels then. Good to know. Not that I ever thought we could, but I was trying to be optimistic about it.

“I’ll do my best,” I promised him.

“Violet.” His tone bristled with warning.

I grinned. “I promise. I’ll try.”

His annoyed snort made me laugh out loud. “Be careful.”

“I’ll try,” I said again.

The bond hummed, strong and healthy. I twanged it one more time just to annoy Lucifer.

Clara sprawled in her chair next to me. I spent the extra time we had waiting for Dave checking my potions belt. It was loaded to the gills with numerous glowing bottles. I had one for just about every scenario, and a few new ones I’d never tested before. The dragon keep was a good place to test them out. It didn’t belong to me, and I didn't give a shit about potential damage. If they worked, I had my answer.

“You’re loaded for bear,” Clara observed. “Do you take that many every time you go out?”

“Nope. I don’t use the belt that often. Only when I think danger is present.”

She snorted. “You must not go out often.”

I didn’t. The thought saddened me more than usual.

Clara’s gaze felt heavy on my face. “When we’re done, I’ll take you out on the town.” She paused. “If we survive.”

“Always the optimist,” I said with a sigh. “We’re going to survive. We’ve got Dave.”

Clara’s eyes lit up. “Dave is coming!”

The octopus shifter came through the door. I almost laughed. Dave looked like a thirty-something-year-old accountant. He wore khakis and a white button-down shirt, a pair of loafers, and he’d brushed his hair into a careful, perfect part to the right side of his head. Dave looked like he was going into an interview.

Clara grinned. “Looking spiffy!”

Dave clutched his chest. “You sure? This isn’t too much?”

Clara wore her usual uniform—one of my tank tops and a pair of skinny jeans with her black combat boots and a damaged black jacket. She’d carefully braided her hair into a tight French braid and pinned the tail underneath her hair to prevent someone from grabbing onto it.

Mine was up in a high bun for the same reasons. I wore jeans, combat boots, and a long-sleeved flannel shirt with a tank top underneath. My only accessories were the potion belt and a ring that stored extra power, just in case things went all to hell.
